Your host does not meet minimum requirements to run VMware workstation

When installing VMware Workstation, you may see the following error-

Your host does not meet minimum requirements to run VMware workstation with hyper-v or device/credential guard enabled
Error

This issue is caused because the system does not meet certain minimum requirements. VMware Workstation and VirtualBox don’t work together with Hyper-V. These applications might not start virtual machines, or they may fall back to a slower, emulated mode.

Your host does not meet minimum requirements to run VMware workstation with hyper-v or device/credential guard enabled.

If VMware Workstation 15.5.5 or newer is run on a Windows host where Hyper-V and/or VBS is enabled, VMs will be launched using Windows Hypervisor Platform technology. VMs will fail to launch if the release version of this technology is not at a particular level, or if the Windows host hardware does not meet certain minimum requirements.

The basic resolution is to:

  • Upgrade host hardware and software to meet minimum requirements as described in the Cause section above.
  • Disable Hyper-V in the Windows host, then launch VMware Workstation and power on VMs. Note that Windows host VBS will be disabled automatically if Hyper-V is disabled

How to disable Hyper-V

Verify Virtualization-based Security (VBS) is Enabled/Not Enabled

  1. Open msinfo32/system information on Windows 10
  2. Under System Summary on the Right-hand page, scroll down to Virtualization-based Security and ensure the Value is set to Not enabled.
  3. If the value is set to enabled follow the steps given below according to disable Hyper-V.

Turn Off Hyper-V

  1. Go to “Turn Windows features on or off”
  2. Make sure Hyper-v is not ticked.
  3. If it is Selected, unselect it and click “Ok”.

Open command prompt window as an administrator

  1. Run “bcdedit /enum {current}”
  2. Note down the hypervisorlaunchtype in case this needs to be reverted
  3. Run “bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off” to disable hypervisor Close the command prompt after   executing the commands and restart the system.
